"The school is located at Chauntra in Mandi District in Himachal Pradesh. It was started by TIRS in1979 to provide elementary education to the children of the Tibetan community in Chauntra. Later on, the CTSA provided some help to the school. Initially it has classes from KG to class III. A number of donors have given financial support for construction of classrooms, staff quarters and purchase of furniture in the school. The school was brought under the administration of the DOE in 1980. At that time there were 10 classrooms with class V being the highest. The school was, later on, upgraded to Middle school i,e, up to class VIII. It was formally inaugurated by H. H. the Dalai Lama on 17th February 1981. Boarding facility was made available when a number of Tibetan children from Tuting (a far flung place in the north east of India) joined the school in 1998. Till date the school has received four batches of children from the area. As such, most of the children of the school are from Tuting. The extension of senior boys and girls hostels was funded by the DANIDA. There is a proposal for the extension of the classrooms by the same donor agency. Today it is a secondary school with class X as the highest. "
