Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) was established in 1989 by the department of science and technology of the Government of India to mark the birth centenary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It is a multidisciplinary research institute situated in Jakkur north of Bangalore India. It is relatively young yet well-known around the whole Globe. The mandate is to pursue & promote world-class research & training at the frontiers of Science & Engineering covering broad areas ranging from Materials to Genetics. Provides a vibrant academic ambience hosting more than 300 Researchers. The Centre is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) Govt. of India. Since 2002 the centre is recognized as a Deemed University by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and student?s degrees are awarded directly by JNCASR. Researchers at the centre are divided into seven units engineering mechanics chemistry and physics of materials evolutionary and organizmal biology theoretical sciences molecular biology and genetics educational technology and geodynamics. The Institute also have two off-campus units at the Indian Institute of Science the chemical biology and condensed matter theory units. Scientific & Engineering Research: Jawaharlal Nehru Science Fellowships: A fellowship scheme named after Jawaharlal Nehru the first prime minister of India has been formulated.The fellowship provides a compensation of US$100,000 for 12 months and offers flexibility to avail it over a total period of three years in any part duration/year. Mission on Nano Science and Technology (Nano Mission): Building upon the promotional activities carried out as part of the Nano Science and Technology Initiative (NSTI) in the highly promising and competitive area of Nano Science and Technology the Govt. of India launched a Mission on Nano Science and Technology (Nano Mission) in May 2007. An allocation of Rs. 1000 crore for 5 years has been made. Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Higher Educational Institutions (FIST): The new scheme "Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Educational Institutions (FIST)" was launched in 2000-2001 considering all the needful factors. Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facilities (SAIFs): The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is providing facilities of sophisticated analytical instruments to researchers through its Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facilities (SAIF) Programme so that the non-availability of these instruments in their institutes may not come in the way of scientists in pursuing R&D activities requiring such facilities and they are able to keep pace with developments taking place globally.About 8,000 scientists/users are utilizing the facilities at the SAIFs annually. Swarnajayanti Fellowships Scheme: Government of India had instituted a scheme "The Swarnajayanti Fellowships" to commemorate India's 50th year of Independence. Selected number of young scientists with proven track record are provided special assistance and support to enable them to pursue basic research in frontier areas of science and technology. Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY): The KVPY is a programme initiated by the Govt. of India to encourage students of the Sciences Engineering & Medicine to take up careers in research in these fields. The programme aims to identify and select students who demonstrate talent and aptitude and encourage and assist them in pursuing research careers in their chosen fields. Scientific Research: International Centre for Materials Science Molecular Biology and Genetics Unit New Chemistry Unit Theoretical Sciences Unit Evolutionary and Organismal Biology Unit Engineering Mechanics Unit Chemistry and Physics of Materials Unit Achievements: Marlow Medal for outstanding contributions to Physical Chemistry Faraday Society England Hevrovsky Gold Medal Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences Order of Scientific Merit Grand-Cross President of Brazil Cultural Events and Sports Events:- Celebration of Fresher?s Welcome Hostel Day: is the main cultural festival of JNC held in the month of February. New Year celebration Diwali celebration Onam Saraswati Puja Ugadi and Holi. Facilities:- Library: DST Library is well equipped & maintained. It has huge collection available of around 614 books/ monographs. The total number of books available in the Library has risen to over 22,000. The Library subscribed to around 110 national/ international scientific and technical journals & around 100 such journals were received. The Online catalogue of Books available in the Library was updated continuously and the total number of machine-readable records now stands at over 13,000. Guest House: The guest house is named Jawahar visitors' house (JVH).It is located at the grounds of Gymkhana of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Machine shop: The equipment has been maintained at this workshop. There are many machines kept and maintained here like lathe machine drilling machine welding machine grinding machine spot welding machine and cutting machine (for sheets only) and filing facilities etc. There is also the provision of glass blowing machine. Animal Facility: The JNCASR animal facility is positioned at a very secluded and private corner of the campus. It is very away from the pollution and noise that is being collected in the environment. Animals are given the best of care and protection. All small equipments are there with the provision of reproduction and experimental rooms for rabbits and rodents and also quarantine. Hostel Facilities: The Students Residence alias Hostel is providing the facilities that students have often dreamt of. The facilities are much updated and very latest in all the aspects and outlooks. Life becomes very comfortable here because the hostels are a paradise where the students find complete bliss and a sense of satisfaction. There are well furnished rooms bathrooms. There are washing machines gym Wi-Fi enabled campus and above all very large guest rooms and huge television sets (LCDs). Sports: Sports are very important for the physical development and growth of a student. There are many indoor and outdoor games provided for the students. The indoor games include Carom Table Tennis Chess and Scrabble. The outdoor games are Cricket Basketball and Volleyball that the students can play. Two courts for badminton and one for football is there. Scholarships:- Project Oriented Biological Education Programme (POBE) for undergraduate with scholarship of Rs. 5000.
