Nestled among the pines in one of the most scenic cities of North-East India, the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) Shillong Campus was established in Shillong in the year 1973 as the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) North-East Campus, one year after Meghalaya achieved statehood. The aim of establishing this campus was to cater to the linguistic and research needs of the region as well as to provide quality training for teachers.
India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, envisioned an institution to impart quality training in English for teachers and in 1958, the Central Institute of English (CIE) was born. The English and Foreign Languages University, as it is now known after its conferment of Central University status in 2007 by an Act of Parliament, upholds that vision and this Campus too has expanded its avenues to add to and upgrade its existing courses.
We now offer courses in BA English/Mass Communication and Journalism, MA in English/Linguistics /Mass Communication and Journalism, M.Phil and PhD courses in English Literature and English Language Education, along with Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses in French, German and Spanish languages.
Shillong, one of the educational hubs of the region, provides an ideal and competitive atmosphere for studies and, in that capacity, we have a bunch of specialized and trained faculty to meet the needs of students. At the same time, we encourage our students to seek for knowledge beyond the classroom walls. A well-stocked library with online-journal access, a well equipped lab for language learning and a multi-media lab for communication students provide ample opportunity for self-study and practice-based learning. We organize a series of lectures to enable students to interact with prominent personalities from all walks of life. Students participate actively in inter-university competitions and have brought accolades to the University. Communication students undergo internship with the media houses to gain field experience.
