NEST 2024 important dates of all the events were out on the official website on March 10, 2024. This year NEST exam will be conducted for a total of 257 seats. For the Integrated MSc programme 2024–29, the total number of seats at NISER and UMDAE CEBS are 200 and 57, respectively.

The official NEST 2024 important dates are updated on this page. The examination conducting body, NISER & UM-DAE CEBS released the information brochure and Flyer which is on this page below. The NEST 2024 application process for the academic session 2024-2025 will commence on March 30, 2024. 

Applicants can do NEST registration till May 31, 2024. This date may also change as application start date changed.  

Aspirants preparing for the NEST 2024 entrance examination must go through the minimal eligibility criteria set by the examination conducting body before applying for the NEST application form. Applicants will get a window period of around two months to fill the NEST 2024 application form. Candidates will also get the opportunity to edit the form if they commit any mistakes while filling up the online NEST 2024 application form. 

The NEST 2024 exam is to be held on June 30, 2024 and admit card for that exam will be out on June 15, 2024 and it can be downloaded till the exam. 

NEST 2024 exam is to be held to identify and select students who have a strong aptitude for pursuing basic sciences at the undergraduate level. The exam is designed to assess students' knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology.

NEST 2024 entrance exam will be conducted in two sessions, and different sets of question papers will be used for each session. The percentile score of NEST will be calculated based on the relative performance of all the qualified candidates in the respective session. The highest score in each session will be the 100 percentile.

 

What is NEST?

National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) is conducted jointly by the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, and Mumbai University - Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS) , Mumbai. The NEST Exam is conducted annually to offer admission for Integrated MSc programmes in:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Physics

Students who perform well in NEST have the opportunity to pursue a high-quality education in basic sciences at two of the country's leading institutes. They also have the opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of world-renowned scientists.

Applicants are advised to be updated about NEST Exam registration details to fill the form and appear in the exam on time to qualify it. 

NEST 2024 Eligibility Criteria

Applicants who want to appear in the exam must check the eligibility criteria before filling the application form. Students must fulfill the eligibility criteria mentioned below: 

  • The candidates who have cleared the 12th Standard examination or equivalent in 2022, 2023 or those who will be appearing for the 12th Standard examination or equivalent in 2024, irrespective of category and age, will be eligible for admission to the Integrated M.Sc. programme of NISER/CEBS in 2024.
  • Applicants must secure at least 60% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade) in Class XII examination from any recognised Board in India. For Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates and for Divyangjan candidates, the minimum requirement is 55%.

Note: If any applicants fail to qualify in the eligibility criteria mentioned above then their candidature may be rejected at any stage of admission process.

NEST 2024 Question Paper

The NEST 2024 question paper will be released online on the official website after the commencement of the examination in June. For better preparation candidates can download the NEST question paper for the previous year's exam. 

Question type: The question paper will consist of 4 (four) sections of objective (MCQ) type questions. Each section is of 60 marks and will contain subject-specific questions from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. Each section will have 20 questions, with exactly one correct answer. Marking correct answer will fetch 3 marks, choosing incorrect answer will lead to deduction of 1 mark and no marks will be deducted for not answering a question. It is in the interest of the candidate to attempt all sections. The merit list for both the institutes will be prepared using the best three scores out of the four sections, and the section with the worst score will not be considered. That is, scores out of 180 marks will be considered for preparing the merit list. For NEST question papers of the last few years, refer to the NEST 2024 website (www.nestexam.in). The language of the question paper will be Hindi and English. In the case of any confusion/discrepancy due to language, the question paper in English will be considered to be the standard one. Answering questions: The examination is a Computer Based Test (CBT). The candidate will enter all the requisite details at the given computer terminal. The questions will be displayed on the monitor. The answers to each question are to be provided at the computer terminal using the given electronic equipment. Details of how to answer at the terminal will be provided before the examination. Applicants are encouraged to practise by using a mock test link that will be made available on NEST 2024 web page several days before the exam date. Practice sessions on the computer-based test will be available for all applicants on the application portal after online registration and complete submission of the online application. The application portal will be accessible with the correct login credentials only.

NEST 2024 will be conducted in 2 shifts so candidates can expect two different sets of question papers in the examination.

The expected exam timings for both sessions of NEST 2024 will be as under:

  • Morning shift - From 9 am to 12:30 pm 
  • Evening shift - From 2.30 pm to 6:00 pm.

NEST 2024 Mock Test

Mock tests are an integral part of NEST preparation. Although the exam officials do not release the official NEST mock tests. However, aspirants and students may solve unofficial NEST mock tests provided by coaching institutes. Solving mock tests give candidates exposure to the question types and topics as well as help build the exam-taking strategy for the actual day of the exam. Along with taking the NEST mock tests, students should also analyse their performance to know their areas of improvement.

 

NEST 2024 Counselling

Candidates who will qualify for the exam will be considered eligible to participate in the NEST 2024 counselling process. The counselling process for NEST 2024 will be conducted in three rounds. Qualifying candidates have to upload documents that will be verified by the officials and seats will be allotted to them. They will have to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and pay the requisite fee to complete the admission process. At the end of the counselling process, NISER Bhubaneswar and CEBS Mumbai will release separate institute-wise merit lists.

How to apply:

To apply for NEST 2024, candidates must fill out the online application form through www.nestexam.in. Candidates are strongly advised to read through the detailed online application procedure available on the website (click on ‘How to Apply online’). The online application process closes on May 31, 2024 (midnight). Applications can be submitted only through the NEST 2024 website. There is no other mode of application submission. Login credentials for logging into application submission and fee payment portals will be provided upon online registration. Application Fee: The application fee for the male candidates of the General and OBC categories is 1,400/–. The application fee for candidates in the SC/ST/Divyangjan categories and for all female candidates is 700/–. Payments can be made using credit card/debit card/net–banking through an online payment gateway. You may use Mastercard/Visa/RuPay cards or UPI as payment options. Candidates need not send any document to the NEST office in the entire application process. Please refer to the instruction sheet (the ‘How to Apply Online’ tab on www.nestexam.in) for details regarding the application process.

Important things to remember:

✔ Candidates are advised to reach the examination venue at least 90 minutes before the start of the examination.

✔ Candidates will NOT be allowed to enter the examination hall any later than half an hour (30 minutes) after the start of the examination, i.e., 9:30 AM in the first session & 3:00 PM in the second session.

✔ Candidates will be allowed to leave the examination hall no sooner than two hours after the start of the examination, i.e. 11.00 AM for the first session & 4.30 PM for the second session (except when required by medical emergencies).

✔ Candidates MUST bring their Admit Card and a valid photo Identity Card to the examination hall. Without these documents the candidate may not be allowed to enter the examination centre.

✔ Use of log tables and calculators in the examination hall is not allowed. Candidates must bring their own blue/black pen. Blank pages for rough work will be provided in the examination hall. A simple on-screen calculator will be provided.

✔ ANY kind of electronic gadgets, including mobile phones, digital/smart watches, storage devices, etc., are not allowed inside the examination hall. 


 

NEST 2024 Syllabus

NEST 2024 syllabus will be released by the exam authorities. Questions in the NEST exam will be asked from topics present in the syllabus of Class 11 and 12 books of the Science stream. The subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. The exam officials have stated that questions in the NEST exam are mainly the science syllabus of Class 11 and 12 that is present in NCERT/ CBSE books. NEST 2024 Preparation Tips

NEST is one of the important examinations that candidates who want to pursue their integrated MSc integrated programmes at NISER, Bhubaneshwar and UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai jointly. 

Understand NEST Syllabus and Pattern: It is very important to know what needs to be studied. The syllabus of NEST 2024 is vast and includes class 11 and 12 topics of Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Maths. Also, the pattern of the exam has to be kept in mind while preparing for the exam to know what type of questions will be asked and the time available to complete the paper.

Refer to previous year's NEST question papers: Previous year's papers are a great source of information. They will help students in understanding the difficulty level of exams and the subject-wise weightage of topics.

Prepare a timetable for study: Studying as per the timetable can help in covering the syllabus in a planned manner. It is highly advised that students make NEST preparation timetable with at least two to three hours for all three subjects and one hour for revision.

Regular Study: As the syllabus of NEST is vast, all chapters will only be covered if studied regularly daily. Regularity is very important in clearing the NEST 2024.

Learning from NCERT textbooks:  NCERT textbooks are the foundation for NEST syllabus. NEST aspirants must learn from the NCERT textbook and create a solid foundation of ideas and theories. They may also refer to other books to understand the concepts better. 

Selecting the Best Reference Books: NEST aspirants must refer to the best reference books that cover topics from the basics to the advanced level. 

Revision: Revision is as important as studying a topic. If students are not revising what they study, there are possibilities that they will not be able to recall it at the time of examinations.

Mock Test Paper: Solve mock test papers regularly. It is advised that students solve chapter-wise mock papers on completion of a chapter and full-length mock test papers after the completion of the entire syllabus.

NEST 2024 Cutoff

NISER Bhubaneswar and CEBS Mumbai will be releasing the NEST 2024 cut-off marks according to sessions, subjects and categories. The NEST 2024 cutoff will be released in two categories - Section-wise Minimum Admissible Score (SMAS), which refers to the sectional cutoff and Minimum Admissible Percentile (MAP) or overall percentile.

According to the officials, for each section, 20 per cent of the average of the best 100 scores in that section will be considered SMAS. SMAS for different sections can be of different numerical values. Along with the sectional NEST cutoff, candidates also need to clear the overall NEST 2024 cutoff percentile. The NEST 2024 cutoff for General category candidates will be 95 percentile, for OBC candidates in 90 percentile and that of the reserved category candidates, it will be 75 percentile. This data is as per the analysis of NEST cutoff for previous year.

NEST 2024 Participating Colleges and Seat Intake

NEST 2024 will be conducted to provide admission to candidates in a five-year integrated MSc programme in Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics) offered at both NISER and UM-DAE CEBS.
