B.Tech. (Civil Engineering)Bachelor of Techonology in Civil Engineering
Civil Engineering comes under the professional wing of all engineering disciplines. It deals with the planning, deigning and construction of physical structures and the maintenance of the built environment for sustainable and healthy living environment. Whatever physical structures that we see around us have been thought of and created by civil engineers and related professionals. Some of the examples of the creation of civil engineers are bridges, flyovers dams, highways, expressways, skyscrapers, airports, railway tracks, canals, docks, ports, harbors, drainage systems, metro etc. Civil engineers use the potential energy of nature and the environment and use it for their use, designing and building the best structures for different purposes. As India is a developing country, construction is the mainstay and development projects run about in almost every part of the country at a brisk pace. It is considered as one of the top few economic activities in the country, bringing about great revenue from within and from abroad. Not only that, novel projects like river-linking, nuclear power plants will only add to the burden of construction companies and organizations and the demand for civil engineers is going to rise exponentially. The Bachelor of technology in Civil Engineering is one of the oldest engineering course of study in the engineering sphere. This formal program has been effective since independence and has been the backbone for India’s infrastructure sector. The duration of this course is 4 years. The first year is common to all other programs in which students are taught the basics of engineering (electrical, civil, computers and mechanical). From third years onwards, specialized courses in Civil Engineering are taught to the students along with practical module in each semester. Some of the courses include Engineering Mathematics, Structural Mechanics, Building and Town Planning, Geology and Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Design of Structures, Transportation Engineering, Foundation Engineering, Material management, Fluid Mechanics, Research methods etc. Civil Engineers are employed in various sectors across the length and breadth of the country. Public Sector undertakings like NHAi, BHEL, IRCON, NTPC, NHPC, government agencies like Indian Railways, and private companies like Larsen and Toubro, Cairn India, ESSAR group, PUNJ Lloyd, GAMMON India, Tata projects are the top recruiters in this industry. The future is very bright for civil engineers in India and a BTech is the formal way to step ahead in this direction.
