Xavier Institute for Tribal Education

Realizing the fact that education of the tribals of the State of Jharkhand is in a deplorable condition and opportunities for their professional career have to be enhanced, the XLRI, in collaboration with Tata Steel, Government of Jharkhand and likeminded public, set up Xavier Institute for Tribal Education (XITE) in 2003 in Gamharia, just outside Jamshedpur city . XITE is a Society registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860, with its registered office at XLRI, Jamshedpur. It is a charitable, not for profit organization registered under section 12 A of Income Tax Act. XITE belongs to the conglomeration of Xavier Institutes in the country such as XLRI, Jamshedpur, XIMB, Xavier University, Bhubaneswar, St. Xavier?s College Mumbai, St. Xavier?s College Kolkata etc. Initially XITE started a Merit Upgradation Programme for the tribals. It was initiated in a poor, economically, socially and educationally backward tribal district of Saraikela-Kharsawan. Some of the students of the Merit Upgradation Programme are doing very well in life. A few of them got employment, some went for further studies and some others have become entrepreneurs. Soon the need for a good college for quality higher education in the area was felt as there are just two hardly functioning government colleges in the entire district, covering an area of 2725 square kilometers and having a population of over seven lakh people. Hence, XITE began a BBA (Bachelor in Business Administration) programme affiliated to the local University in 2007 as a stepping stone for MBA.
