The Cochin College was founded on July 15, 1967, in response to an increasing demand for higher education opportunities in West Kochi. The College symbolises the hopes and aspirations of the public of Kochi and is a milestone in the history of the commercial town of Kochi. From its humble beginning as a Junior College in 1967, the institution slowly and steadily grew into a post-graduate college in 1995.The college was accredited with B+ by the NAAC in 2003 and re-accredited with B Grade (2.85) in 2012. The College is sponsored by the Cochin Education Society which was founded as a result of the joint efforts of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and the former Mattancherry Municipal Council. The College is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and offers various courses in both Science and Humanities at the degree level such as Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Commerce, Economics, English Literature and Mathematics. At the P.G level the College offers M.Com, with specialization in Financial Management, M.Sc Physics with Electronics, M.Sc Chemistry with Environmental Chemistry and M.Sc. Mathematics. M.A. in English Language and Literature and M.Sc. Zoology has been introduced in the academic year 2013-14. The College is consistently producing good results in all the disciplines in University examinations.
