The South Indian Vaaniar Educational Trust owes its birth to the far-sighted vision and vigorous initiative of late Hon?ble Justice Thiru.S.A.Ayyasami Chettiar, M.A., B.L., who raised donations from the generous-hearted and public-spirited members of the Vaaniar Community. He created the above charitable organization in 1960. The First Finance Minister of Independent India, Hon?ble Thiru.R.K.Shanmugham Chettiar was the Secretary of the SIVE Trust. The primary aim of the Trust has always been to promote education, an investment for national development through the available human resources. To this end, the Trust initially extended its financial assistance to the meritorious but needy students in the form of scholarships. This induced many of the youngsters of the Vaaniar Community to pursue higher studies in college. The message of the Trust becoming loud and clear more and more donors of the community came forward to offer their contributions to augment the resources of the Trust. The then Government of Tamil Nadu assigned to the Trust a site of 28 acres at a nominal cost. S.I.V.E.T. College came into being at Gowrivakkam in July 1966 in a modestly constructed but adequately equipped building. The College gaining its strength and popularity paved way for the Trust to venture in getting the institution upgraded into a Degree College. University of Madras, within whose jurisdiction the College comes, granted affiliation to B.A. (History) and B.Sc (Mathematics) courses, in 1971 and thus a created landmark in the history of the College. There has been no looking back and the institution further registered significant progress in receiving affiliations from the University of Madras for more major courses at the under-graduate level viz., Economics, Commerce, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Corporate Secretary ship. At present, the S.I.V.E.T. College has more than 3000 students on its rolls. The infrastructural facilities are being augmented on a phased basis. During the academic year 92-93, the college started the Evening College wing with B.Sc. Computer Science Course and now it has got expanded with a huge intake of students. The college offers eight Under Graduate programs of three years duration and two Post Graduate programs with two years duration in Shift I. In addition to, Shift-II [Self-Finance Stream] also has six U.G. programs and three P.G. programs. Accreditation by NAAC with B++ and grant-in-aid by U.G.C. has helped to scale to great heights in performance by the sheer guidance and financial assistance by the management authorities. The college also has the pride to announce the induction of Master of Philosophy programs in the Post Graduate Departments, Mathematics and Commerce. Besides, the college is also authorized and permitted by the University of Madras to conduct Doctoral Programs in History, Mathematics and Commerce. Though situated in a rather semi-urban rural environment the college has not failed to attract the attention of distinguished personalities. It had cherished, with a sense of legitimate pride, the visits of many celebrities, which include a Vice-President of India, Governors of States, Central and State Ministers, Judge, Vice-Chancellors, Industrialists, Educationists, Academicians, Artistes and others known for their worthy contributions to the enrichment of the public life of our country. Their address had given inspiration to both teachers and students who have continually endeavored to bring greater credits and distinction to the college in many ways. The college has also the pride of having Prof.Dr.S.V.Chittibabu, M.A., D.Litt. former Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj and Annamalai Universities, a doyen and beacon light in the field of education, in the Trust. His deep interest and experience in the field of education has made the college to tread on his paved paths of progress. Now, against above backdrop, the College feels a sense of rejoicing over its completion of forty-nine years of eventful service in the cause of higher education and culture. Next year it awaits for the Golden jubilee celebrations. The modern motto ?Go Global? has made S.I.V.E.T .college to enter into the mainstream of Education. Automation in the office works through computers and internet-networking pattern is in vogue. Database of the students, result analysis, examination numbering. Staff salary, information from University, UGC project reports are ready for anyone at anytime to view as per RTI. The above methods are implemented through UGC and the management funds. The first step of a sophisticated new era in the college started with installation of the R.O. Plant System in 2009 to the tune of Rs.3, 50,000/- in order to serve potable water to both students and staff. The beginning of Visual Communication Department is another milestone in the annals of SIVET College. The Management was keen to expose our students to the media world by procuring highly sophisticated Visual Communication Gadgets to the tune of Rupees One Crore. Four SLR Cameras, Two Professional Video Cameras, Two Digital Cameras, an Editing Suite and Recording Equipments are the necessitated highlights in the college. They have also constructed Laboratories for editing purposes to the tune of Rs.20 lakhs. CCTV at the cost of Rs.5, 87,000/- with 57 cameras have been installed to monitor the movement of students during daytime and miscreants at night, if any, on a huge compass. Security staff has been posted round the clock for vigilance purposes. A women?s hostel to the tune of one crore from UGC and the excess of 59 lakhs from the management to give a neat and good facility, is the greatest leap in the achievement of the college. A computer centre with 25 computers, network facility and 10 KV separate UPS are bought for the utilization of students on computing skills. An estimated amount of nine lakhs was from the UGC and the management to meet out the installation and maintenance charges generously granted rest of the four lakhs. A high profile Computer Lab with 100 Computers, Network facilities and 40 KVA Separate uninterrupted Power System to the tune of rupees Forty Lakhs is given to the utilization of students on computing skills. The management for the conduction of seminars and discourses to all the streams inaugurated a conference hall to the tune of six lakhs. The modernization of the auditorium to the tune of three lakhs has also helped the Departments to conduct National Conferences and symposiums. Two 125 KVA Diesel Generator Sets for Rs.12, 50,000 were additionally installed for the interrupted power supply to the women?s hostel. The college is proud enough in using the usage of modern gadgets. Two LCD projectors (wide screen) Rs.48, 000/- and Rs.90, 000 respectively have been installed in the Auditorium. The Management for the use of both the shift college funded a digital studio to the tune of Rs.20 lakhs. A separate computer lab for day college students, 4 photocopiers for the benefit of staff, students, each department with a separate computer and printer and 5 computers for the office are the added facility in the college working atmosphere. Internet facility is also available for students and staff. The college can legitimately boast of a vast playground .It gives a great scope for all major and minor games like Cricket, Hockey, Football, Volleyball, Basket-Ball etc. Facilities for indoor games like Table Tennis, Chess, and Caroms etc. are also provided. The construction of the Indoor Stadium in the process and has received the permission from CMDA. Everyyear Twenty-20 Matches are conducted under the munificence of the Management authorities.
The College has distinguished itself in sports and extra-curricular activities as well as in its academic programmes. In a view to encourage and foster a sense of national pride, cultural integration, team spirit, fellowship, social consciousness and community service, students have been made to utilize the opportunities to participate in inter-collegiate sports, debates, cultural festivals, N.C.C. and N.S.S. programmes and projects. In addition, some of them have won many a laurel and enhanced the image of the institution. Those in the N.C.C. and N.S.S. have distinguished themselves in rendering social service ways and thereby they have helped to bring the college closer to the community. Placement cell of the college provides empowerment workshop, placement drives, job opportunities and sending database of students with good caliber to various leading companies. In the various campuses drives Ford India, Omega Health Care, Consult One India, Hindustan Unlived, Wipro, Fen to Technologies, TATA AIG, Maruti Suzuki, DHL, Tech Mahindra, HTC, TCS, First Source, Airtel and RBC. The guidance cell in the college gives counseling on academic, economic and psychological aspects. It also helps the students to overcome the stress brought by medium of language and environmental difficulties. The girl students are given proper guidance on safety, and are counselled by the woman staff appointed by the college. The college not alone caters to the academic needs but also fosters patriotism, integration, unity and leadership qualities through Independence Day and Republic Day Celebrations, Martyrs day, Gandhi Jayanthi, Traditional Way of Pongal Celebrations, Women?s Day , NCC Day , NSS Day, Sports Day and Tamil Mandram Muperum Vizha. Students are also encouraged to participate in inter collegiate competitions, seminars and workshops. Students Grievances and Redressal Boxes are kept in the front of the Office, the committee opens the boxes at weekends, and the administrative authorities take immediate actions. Besides, the students are free enough to approach the Heads of Departments for redressing their grievances, if any. All these actions have entered into the Annals of SIVET History and the History makers are none but the managementmembers who took over the board from the fag-end of 2008. At present Thiru.R.Veloo, B.A., the President, Thiru.C.Madasamy, B.Sc.,F.C.A., the Secretary and Thiru.D.Balakrishnan, the Treasurer are from the SIVE Trust. These pillars have backed the college committee in all ways. The college committee is headed by Thiru.S.Madappa Chettiar and is steered towards proper destination by Thiru.G.Selvanathan,B.E.,M.B.A., Secretary of the College.
