Shrimati Indira Gandhi College

Shrimati Indira Gandhi College was founded in 1984 by that great educationist Vidys Seva Ratnam K. Santhanam, as the then secretary of National College Council, with the active support of President Y.Venkateshwara Dikshidhar. It is situated in the heart of the town, right opposite to the Chatram Bus stand. It is an unaided college and one of the first two colleges in the State founded simultaneously and exclusively for Women. It was so named in remembrance of the greatest women Prime Minister of the world. There is a life size statue of Indira Gandhi in the campus to inspire the students. Classes commenced with the Blessings of His Holiness the 44th Jeer of Shri Ahobila Mutt on 15th October 1984. The college was formally inaugurated by the then Vice president of India His Excellency Sri.R.Venkataraman. The Object of the Founders was to strive for the Economic Empowerment of Women through Economic Independence, achieved by Employment through Job Oriented courses. This object has been amply fulfilled down the years. Our Alumni are well placed and well settled both in India and abroad. Started with humble beginnings with 2 courses and 10 Teachers the college attained rapid growth in a short while and secured public recognition as a premier institution for the Higher education of Women. Today we have near fifty courses and prepare students for high academic Degrees like M.B.A, M.C.A and Ph.D besides U.G and P.G Degrees in varied Disciplines. The speciality of the college is that besides Banking at Degree level and Hospital Administration at the PG level, we offer Computer Science at all levels, from B.Sc to Ph.D. Even non-computer students are taught the basics of Computer Application. We also offer M.B.A and M.C.A with AICTE Approval. The credit for the miraculous growth of the college in the early years is due in no small measure to the dedication and hard work of the Founder Secretary K.Santhanam. For the first half a dozen years, he was engaged in finding Teachers, regulating admissions, providing infrastructure, getting New Affiliations, putting up New Blocks, corresponding with AICTE for starting the M.B.A and M.C.A programmes, getting permanent Affiliation from the University, UGC Recognition for the college and Accreditation by NAAC and he did all this single handed. Treading the path laid down by him, the present management has introduced more courses and secured Re-accreditation at 'A' Grade by NAAC. Another cycle of accreditation from NAAC is due shortly. Successive principals of the college Miss.N.S.Jaya, Dr.T.Kamala, Dr.K.Meena, and the present principal Dr.S.Vidhyalakshmi have contributed richly to the growth of the institution. Among them Dr. K. Meena deserves special mention for having been instrumental as Vice principal and as Principal for securing several new affiliations and setting up the labs in active cooperation with the Management. It was a feather in her cap that she had been appointed as Vice chancellor, the highest office in the University of our University and had a rich and fruitful Career. Our staff are appointed not merely on the basis of their Academic Qualifications but on the basis of their competence in handling classes. We appoint m+1 hands in certain Departments in order that Students should not suffer when the staff go on leave. To promote Research the management offers attractive cash incentives for securing Ph.D, for guiding M.Phil and Ph.D scholars and for publication of research articles in National and International Journals. The management is also student friendly and offers a number of scholarships and fee concessions from its own funds and through Endowments and Sponsoring Agencies. There are 3 hostels with modern amenities in this campus for the benefit and security of outstation candidates. The results of the students in the University Examinations have always been Excellent and include many top Ranks. The management follows a policy of Awarding medals to the first five rank holders in every subject. In addition the management also presents a shield to the Best Department in Science and Arts & Languages separately for U.G and P.G every year. The college has celebrated its Decennium in 1996, Bi-Decennium in 2005 and Silver Jubilee in 2010 Godwilling the aim of the Management is to promote the college as the Top Ranking Women's college at National Level with International Standards to enable the students to meet global challenges and make a mark in the world and raise it to the status of a university.
