Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, an autonomous college affiliated to Bharathidasan University is a renowned women?s institution in Tiruchirappalli. At the time when educating women was not much favored in the society, the founder established the institution with the noble purpose of educating them. His ardent desire was to provide modern education to women in the background of the rich Indian culture. Noble thought , perseverance, God's grace and public support helped the founder to further develop the institution. Gaining a good reputation as a safe place for girls , the institution grew further. The institution which began in a thatched building with a handful of girls in 1951,has a flowing population of nearly 4,000. The history of the institution is marked with several events like upgradations and innovations in the academic field , visits of eminent personalities, constructions of the temples, prayer hall and memorial hall etc apart from the basic infrastructure, hours of glory when the people of the institution were honoured with prestigious awards, set backs due to natural calamities and so on. Today with a remarkable educational history of more than half a century, the college caters to the needs and requirements of nearly 4000 girl students studying in various Arts, Science & Commerce Courses - 22 at UG level and 17 at PG level, besides two post graduate diploma courses. The Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Commerce, Economics, History and English offer M.Phil. Programs and the Departments of Chemistry, Physics and English have Ph.D affiliation. The UGC sponsored Event Management Course, the Self-financing Para-professional courses and the Vocational Courses in Advertisement, Sales Promotion and Sales Management are worthy of special mention here. The sprawling campus that spreads over 25 acres, houses all departments in separate blocks. New buildings have come up to accommodate the students of new courses that have been introduced. The New Saraswati block that houses the general library, (well stocked and digitalized with 60,000 books, apart from Dept. libraries) a language lab and a new computer centre on the top floor, is one of the main attractions of the college. Two fully equipped seminar halls (air-conditioned with multimedia facility) , a big prarthana mandap, are some of the new features.
