Government College Sarkaghat was established by Himachal Pradesh Government as a multi faculty, co-educational institute in the year 1985. Now, it has been renamed as Rabindra Nath Tagore Govt. Degree College Sarkaghat. Since its very inception, it has progressively emerged as one of the leading institution of higher learning in rural area of Himachal Pradesh. The college is recognized by UGC under 2f & 12B, and affiliated to the Himachal Pradesh University. The College has been assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), a Bengaluru based autonomous body under UGC in the month of April 2013 and awarded grade B. Located at a distance of 60 Kilometres from the district town of Mandi (H.P.), this college is situated on the outskirts of Sarkaghat town, in a sprawling ground and lush green fields. It lies between Chandrakhri hill range in the NW and Maseran & Bhatoh hill ranges in the East at 31? 40? 43? Northern latitude and 76?43? 36? Eastern longitude. With a campus spread over almost 20 acres of a landmass, the college has a big playground with facilities for the entire major out door games. The college has a vast infrastructure including spacious classrooms, well equipped science labs, facilities for outdoor games, computer lab with internet facilities, well stock library, reading room and girls? hostel. Another feather is added to its cap with the construction of new Science Block with a big Multipurpose Hall. IGNOU study centre is also functioning in the college premises. It provides an ideal ambience to the students for the pursuit of learning and development of personality. The enrolment of students year after year testifies to the fact that more and more students prefer this college as a destination.
