The genesis of the College has to be traced back to the historical visit of the Holy Father Pope John Paul II, the reigning Pope, to our motherland in 1986.In perfect accordance with the vision of the Holy Father and in response to the aspiration of the people of Pondicherry, the Senate of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry - Cuddalore decided to embark, for the first time, on tertiary education. Consequently, the first College of the Archdiocese as well as the first College of Education of the Union Territory took shape. In honour of the Holy Father, the College was named after him. It stands as a monument espousing the values of the Pontiff. On July 23, 1986, under the auspices of the Archdiocese, Pope John Paul II College of Education was formally inaugurated and dedicated to His Holiness Pope John Paul II by the eminent scholar late Dr. K. Venkatasubramanian, M.A., B.T., Ph.D., B.L., the then Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University, with the blessings of Most Rev. Dr. V. S. Selvanather, the then Archbishop of Pondicherry - Cuddalore, with the good wishes of the Honourable Minister for Education, Thiru. L. Joseph Mariadoss and with the pioneering work of Rev. Fr. Dr. J.
