The P.K.N. Arts & Science College, established in the year 1996 was conceived by P.K.N. Vidyasala Sangam Committee, a philanthropic educational agency in Tirumangalam under the Presidentship of Mr.R. Vijayarajan Nadar and Mr.S. Mohandass Nadar as Treasurer. A College Commitee was constituted with Mr. M.V.M.S. Rajamanickam Nadar as correspondent, Mr. M.A.K. Kathirvel Nadar, M.A., as President and Mr. K.P.M.N. Dhanraj Nadar as Treasurer. The other members of the committee were Mr. K.P.M.M. Kasimani Nadar, Mr. C. Rathnam Nadar, Mr. R.Vijayarajan Nadar, Mr. B. Rajendran Nadar. The College started functioning on the 16th of September 1996 with four Courses namely B.B.A., B.com., B.Sc.Maths and B.Sc.Bio-chemistry. There were 33 students both boys and girls and 15 faculty members. It was housed in the Science Block of P.K.N. Higher Secondary School. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the committee members and the generosity of the all committes P.K.N. Vidyasala Sangam Committee, P.K.N. Boys School Committee, P.K.N. Girls School Committee, P.K.N. Matriculation School Committee, Tuticorin P.K.N. Uravinmurai. The College was shifted to the permanent building on Vidathakulum road 3 kms east of Tirumangalam, in the very next year on 19th June 1997. From then on the college made strides and the locality came to be known as P.K.N. Nagar. In 1997-98 B.Sc. Micro-Biology was introduced and the students strength rose to 98. In June 1998 B.Sc. Computer Science and P.G.D.C.A. were introduced, and by the academic year 1999-2000 the strength has risen to 317. Co-curricular Diploma and Certificate Course in Computer Applications were introduced in June 2000. In the academic year 2001-2002 in deference to Persistent Public demand, new courses, namely B.Sc. IT (Information Technology), B.Com. (C.A), B.C.A. were introduced and by 2003 the strength has risen to 434. In the academic year 2003-2004 M.Com., course will be incepted in the curriculam (subject to affiliation of Madurai Kamaraj University). The college provides the opportunity of learning various Computer Diploma Courses especially for the M.Com., students to meet the challenging scenario. Separate Hostel for Girls has been functioning from June 2001 near the college premises and a separate Hostel for Boys will start functioning from June 2003 onwards in the college campus. Another building of several classes is being added to the existing infrastructure which will be utilised from June 2003 onwards.
