JSM College

JSM College, Alibag is the first senior college of Raigad (Kulaba) District and the Junior college wing was added in 1976. Late Shri NANASAHEB KUNTE is the founder Chairman of Janata Shikshan Mandal, Alibag. The mandal and college office started their work threee months before opening of the college and newly appointed young enthusiastic Principal R. T. Kulkarni along with his office staff started their work from 1st April, 1961 to complete the formalities of opening the college. Although the Janata Shikshan Mandal under the leadership of Nanasaheb Kunte have decided to start the college at Alibag, there were many problems with raising of funds and running the daily activities of college as the college was not having its own building and other infrastructural facilities. But fortunately, with a very good luck on the institution part, new court building was constructed and as the court offices shifted to new premises, the old british structures along with 5 acers beautiful campus at seashore was handed over to the Janata Shikshan Mandals at nominal rent, for 99 years on lease, due to the efforts made by Nanasaheb Kunte at the Maharastra Goverment authorities. The old building still exists and initially it was catering the library, laboratory space needs of college. Three classroom, a libray hall(Reading roooms) and three more samll rooms for chemistry lab were constructed in 1961-62. From June 1962, Gymkhana and N.C.C. activities were started & college began to expand with S.Y. classes, new staff members, new construction & so on. From the very begining, Boy's hostel & Girl's hostel facilities were available & in 1967-68 new building for Ladies hostel was constructed right on campus. Till 1974 the JSM College was affiliated to University of Pune and after June 1974 it was transferred to MUMBAI UNIVERSITY. The college is recognised by UGC under 2(f) and 12(B) from 1974 and recieves various grants from UGC since 1972. The only other educational institute conducted by Janata Shikshan Mandal is Saral Highschool at Saral which was started in 1966-67. In 1984 the college was permenantly affiliated to University of Mumbai. Under the able leadership of Adv. Datta Patil, teh college has developed to cater all modern needs of students with respect to iinfrastructure as well as teh curriculum offered. In June 2000, Law college was started in th same campus with seperate specious building including moot court and huge library.
