The JMJ college was established on 1 st July 1963, a catholic Christian minority institution to impart higher Education for rural women and for a long time the only women college in Tenali town of Guntur District of A.P. It was set up by the congregation of the sisters of the society of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The college was started on 1.7.1963 and located at Municipal Girl's School with 75 PUC students of Arts and Science The JMJ sisters occupied the land which is located 3K.M away from Tenali town on the high way Tenali- Guntur route near Angalakuduru village. The foundation stone was laid for the first wing of the college in Dec. 1963 by Mother Marie-de- Montfort Superior General of the Society. In the year 1964, B.A. class was started with 12 students and in 1965 permission was given to commerce B.Sc. with 24 students. The Hostel with 30 students formed as part of the sister's quarters which was located in a rented building in the town. In July 1965, the college was shifted to the permanent site. Classes were conducted partially in the temporary sheds and in the one wing of the main building. On May 17 th 1966, Sri A. Balaram Reddy Minister for Education A.P laid the foundation stone for the second wing. In the year 1969, a two-year Intermediate course was introduced in Science and arts in both media. Ever since the strength of the college began to increase. In the year 1971 the college was accorded permanent affiliation and B.Com course was introduced. Home science was introduced in the intermediate course in the 1973. In the year 1976 the affiliation was shifted from Andhra University to Nagarjuna University . From the year 1965 college was recognized by the U.G.C. In the year 1982 General Inspection committee headed by Prof. D. Bhaskar Reddy V.C. of Nagarjuna University adjudged the college as one of the best colleges in the University. In the same year COSSIP and COHSSIP were introduced. New library building was completed and inaugurated in 1994. There is a progress in the courses of the college. The self-finance courses like Industrial microbiology, Computer B.Sc., Computer B.Com., B.Sc. (MCS)., B.C.A., B.A. (MES)., B.Sc. Medical Lab Technology, B.Sc. Electronics were introduced from 1998 to 2002. Inter vocational course was also started in 1997. JMJ community college was started in the year 1999. In the year 1999 the executive committee of the National Accreditation and Assessment inspected the college and accredited at the B ++ level . In the year 1998 N.C.C was started. In the year 2001 P.G courses MCA., M.Sc. Computers and M.Sc Mathematics were launched. In the year 2003 M.Sc. Chemistry was started. So the college necessitated the growth of infrastructure facilities in the campus. So in the year 2001 extension of 2 nd floor in commerce block was completed. Now the college is well established with beautiful buildings, with sufficient number of spacious class rooms, laboratories, library facilities, a separate fully computerized Administrative block, Assembly hall, open air stage, canteen, hostel buildings together with large dining hall, recreation hall and SBI JMJ college branch. In the month of Feb.2003 foundation stone was laid by Sr. Cletus, Superior General, Bishop Rt. Rev. Gali Bali, the Bishop of Guntur, Sri. Yadlapati Venkata Rao Member of Parliament for the well equipped Auditorium. The college has beautiful gardens, spacious sports grounds and sports facilities. From the outset JMJ college made every effort to see high standards in education and that high education standards are maintained and results secured. Ever since the college was started almost every year students secured university ranks 100% results and won several gold medals. Nearly 10,000 students have graduated and some of the old students of the college are working as Govt. Officers, Bank officers, Scientists, Doctors, Advocates, Lecturers, Teachers, Professors, Engineers both in India and different parts of the world. Some students are also settled as Industrialists and businesswomen. JMJ believe in giving an education that promotes all round development of the students. Utmost attention is paid to extra curricular activities like sports and games, NCC, NSS, cultural and literary activities. The JMJ College has rendered its 40 years of services to the women of Andhra Pradesh in empowering to reach higher goals. We are indeed happy to celebrate Ruby Jubilee.
