The College is named after the Servant of God, Mar Thomas Kurialacherry, the first native Bishop of Changanacherry and the Founder of the Sisters of the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.The founding of Bishop Kurialacherry College in 1965 by the SABS Congregation was inspired by the vision of our Heavenly Patron, Servant of God , Mar Thomas Kurialacherry who had forseen the vital importance of the uplift ,enlightenment, and empowerment of women. It was his vision that by educating women we can create better home society and nation. When we educate a woman we are educating a generation he used to say.
Our College is situated in Amalagiri a suburb, 10 kms away from Kottayam , about half a kilometer north of CaritasMedical College road , on the Medical College Mahatma Gandhi University road and about 1 km. west of M.C. Road. The foundation stone of the college was laid by his Grace Most Rev.Dr.Mathew Kavukatt on 14th January 1965 the 92nd anniversary of the birth of Bishop Kurialacherry. The College started functioning on 5th July 1965 under the able guidance of Sr. Mary Xavier as the first Principal. The Management is actively involved in planning and implementing innovative programmes for the development of the students and society. It has always held the lamp of learning high with its motto Accendere Lumen to kindle the light and has removed the darkness of ignorance from the minds of those who entered the portals of our institution.
The college is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and was upgraded in 1980. The College was accredited by NAAC in 1999- 2000 at the three star level. In 2007 the college successfully under went the process of Re-Accreditation and was awarded the B++ Grade. The NAAC report has specially complimented the college for its pioneering efforts in the field of womens education .We welcome students belonging to all walks of life , irrespective of class, caste and creed
