Basanti Devi College

Named after Basanti Devi an eminent woman nationalist leader, Basanti Devi College was established in August 1959, with the mission of empowerment of women. It is the first sponsored girls? college by the Government of West Bengal under scheme 2F of the UGC. Basanti Devi College of today is a premier girls? college, advantageously situated in the busy commercial locality of Gariahat, the heart of South Calcutta. Being very close to Ballygunge Railway Station, a junction station of Sealdah South Section , the College is close to the gateway of the rural district of South 24-Parganas. The College thus has the advantage of catering the students from the highly urban areas of Kolkata as well as the remote rural areas of outskirts. A large fraction of our students from the rural areas come from the economically weaker agricultural families, scheduled caste and tribe and other minorities families and also from other backward classes. Apart from training to be good academicians, the girls are taught to honour certain fundamental social values, like respect and consideration for fellow beings and the necessity for working harmoniously as part of a group. The teachers also help them to come forward in the academic field with new zeal . The College itself is involved in regular counselling of the girls students coming to the College from different socio-cultural and economic background and help them to have a normal life of their own.
