Pope?s college, located at Sawyerpuram is one of the rural colleges in Thoothukudi District of Tamilnadu state. It is a resurgence of an institution that was founded in the past in 1880 as a seminary, by Dr. G .U. Pope, the revered missionary from England and run for only three years in Sawyerpuram. The college was later incorporated with Madras Christian College, Chennai for certain reasons. The college was rejuvenated as a regular institution in 1962 in pragmatic memories of Pope in the red soil of Sawyerpuram, with the help of alumni association (POBA) of Pope Memorial High School and a team of dedicated pioneer staff members, under the intelligent guidance of Prof. D.S. George Muller, the founder principal. The Vision and Mission of the college stand alongside its holistic transformation goals for students from especially poor and rural backgrounds. The college has completed fifty two years of its valid services to the community of such students of this rural area. Pope?s college offers full-time graduate, post-graduate and research degree courses in a number of faculties ? ten UG; seven PG and two research programmes. The significance of the college is that it has a dominant strength of rural women students. Presently, the college remains as one of the highest ranked colleges in the outskirts of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, with grade ?A? through NAAC I cycle accreditation. This elegant institution is managed by the C.S.I. Thoothukudi ? Nazareth Diocese, Thoothukudi. ?Be first be with The First? is its motto; devoted members are its staff; excellent learners and leading blood donors are its students; justly wonderful is its I.Q.A.C; tribal pupils from Jharkhand and a few northern states, orphans and semi-orphans and visually impaired students from elsewhere are the added folks to the student mass. At present, the college is technologically well-equipped in all areas ? Digital Connectivity, Broadband internet up to classrooms, Smart boards in all departments, OHP, Wi-Fi Linkage (Radius 100 m) and L.C.D projection system as resources of educational aids and knowledge. Altogether, this rural college provides quite a highly encouraging I.C.T modular environment for learning. In spite of limited funding sources, the college has steadily been building its capacity to become a great college by catering more and more infrastructure facilities for its students and contributing to societal needs and by starting new courses of study relevant to the technological developments in the modern world. In Pope?s college, the instructional expectations are clear, student-centered and achievable and its students will be well prepared to achieve a head start in their higher education and their future career. We do hope that this graceful institution will serve to create a recovery of interest in Dr. G. U. Pope, who lit the lamp of learning in the rural soil of Sawyerpuram.
