The next step of course was to start a college, and the Trust was geared up to it. The respectable President of the Trust Sri M.Parimala Kandar, and The Correspondent, Sri. M.Rathinasabapathy, were willing to take the noble mission of Sri Kandaswami Kandar further. But there were compelling reasons to justify the establishment of a college in a backward rural area like Velur. The students in and around had to go to cities like Salem, Trichy, Coimbatore, Chidambaram and Madras for their higher studies and poor families could not afford the expenses. Many talented students had to be content with what was available in Velur. In the best traditions of the Founder, it was decided to start a college in Velur. Sri. K.Kamaraj then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu blessed the endeavour and the University of Madras gave affiliation first for the Pre-University course and later to Degree courses in Arts and Science subjects. The College functioned in temporary buildings for some time while new building activites were going on. In 1967 the college moved to its own premises and Sri C.N.Annadurai, then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu declared it open. In 1971 the Postgraduate courses in many science subjects like Microbiology, Biotechnology, etc., were started. The University of Madras approved our research facilities leading to the award of Ph.D degree. This was a singular honour for a college in a rural area. Now the Institution is perched in its own campus of 52 acres of fertile greenery with all facilities. There is a big library and research labs for all subjects. Computer and internet facilities are available in abundance. There is an English language lab. A full fledged green house with medicinal plants is available in the campus. IGNOU courses are available for students who are eager to seek twin degrees. The college imparts value based quality education. The faculty are fully qualified and dedicated. Modern trends have been introduced in the teaching and learning methods. State and National Level Seminars and workshops are conducted at regular intervals. Every year the number of medal winners at the University level is increasing. The educational horizon has broadened. The educational requirements of the economically poor and downtrodden people of this region have been abundantly fulfilled.
